Peter Karp, Ph.D.

Peter D. Karp is director of the Bioinformatics Research Group at SRI International. Dr. Karp is the bioinformatics architect of the EcoCyc and MetaCyc databases. EcoCyc describes the genome and the metabolic pathways of E. coli. MetaCyc is a multi-species metabolic pathway database. He has developed algorithms for visualization of metabolic pathways, and for prediction of metabolic pathways from genome data. His research interests include knowledge representation and database systems, pathway bioinformatics, microbial genomics, and machine learning.

Dr. Karp has authored more than 50 publications in bioinformatics and computer science. He serves on the editorial boards of the journal Bioinformatics, and was a founding member of the International Society for Computational Biology. He was a vice president at DoubleTwist Inc, a bioinformatics company. He was a postdoctoral fellow at the National Center for Biotechnology Information at the National Institutes of Health. He received the Ph.D. degree in Computer Science from Stanford University in 1989.
