Srikanta P. Kumar, PhD

Biography

Dr. Kumar is currently a Program Manager at the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), on loan from the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) where he is a Senior Technical Advisor in the Information Technology Laboratory. At DARPA, he has led the development of advanced research and technology in a broad array of areas including computational systems biology, communication networks, micro-sensors, and cognitive information processing systems. He is responsible for the creation and management of the DARPA Bio-SPICE project (in the Bio-Computation Program), an open source modeling and tool development environment for systems biology. In addition, during 2000-2005, he formulated the technical framework for several other cutting-edge technology programs, including the Sensor Information Technology (SensIT) program, the Network Modeling and Simulation (NMS) program, and the Real-World Reasoning (REAL) program. He has also been responsible for the management and execution of these programs.

Dr. Kumar was a tenured faculty member in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department, Northwestern University, Evanston, IL, from 1985 to 1998, where he was also the founding Director of the Executive Masters Program on Information Technology, an inter-disciplinary program combining technology, business, and policy. He served on the faculty of Electrical, Computer, and Systems Engineering Department, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Troy, NY, from 1982 to 1985, and the State University of New York at Buffalo from 1981 to 1982. He has published more than 80 technical papers, and has given several keynote presentations and invited talks in research conferences, military symposia, and business forums. Dr. Kumar received his Ph.D. degree in engineering and applied science from Yale University, New Haven, CT, in 1981, and M.E., and B.E. degrees in electrical and computer engineering from the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, in 1976 and 1974, respectively, and B.S. (Honors) degree in physics from Bangalore University, India, in 1971.
